LOCATION:

If Japan considers Tokyo to be its Eastern center, then Osaka is naturally considered as its Western center. With a population of 8,835,919 (2009 est.), Osaka is the second largest city in Japan and also noted for its ever expanding industries (just to name a few, machinery, electric machinery, iron and steel, metal fabrication, chemicals, pulp/paper, food processing and printing/ publishing). Many thanks can be addressed to the warlord, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who took power in the 16th century and swiftly brought much success to Osaka. He also built the Osaka castle in 1583, which now quietly overlooks the city and its rapid movements, changing day by day. With a balanced mixture of historical and urban essences, Osaka also prides in its cultural aspect, such as the occasional Kabuki (traditional musical theatre) and Bunraku (traditional puppet theatre) performances. In addition, there are numerous universities and colleges in the city and its suburban area, which also outlines Osaka’s keen interest in education. With so much going on in an area of 85 square miles (220 square kilometers), an intricate network of railway systems aid people to conveniently travel in, out and through the city.
